React has long been the primary library for building web interfaces, but the rise of meta-frameworks like Next.js has changed the landscape. Selecting the correct stack depends on requirements for search discoverability, page speed, routing patterns, and team experience.

Library vs. opinionated Framework

React is a library focused on components and state. Developers must configure their own bundler, routing structure, and data-fetching patterns. Next.js is an opinionated framework that comes preconfigured with server-side rendering, folder-based routing, static compilation, and image optimization engines.

Server-Side Rendering (SSR) & Server Components

Next.js uses React Server Components (RSC) by default. Fetching data on the server eliminates client-side round-trips, reduces JavaScript bundle sizes, and boosts Core Web Vitals. Pure React apps run in browser environments, which can delay initial content paint on slower network connections.

When to Choose Standalone React

If you are building an interactive dashboard behind a login wall, or a single-page app (SPA) where SEO is irrelevant, a pure React setup with Vite can simplify configuration and prevent server-side deployment complexities.
